Volume Integral Equation Methods

Bistatic RCS for an anisotropic sphere.

For highly inhomogeneous medium and for anisotropic medium, the surface integral equation method is not generally available and methods based on the volume discretization are required. One option is the volume integral equation method (VIE) based on the volume equivalence principle.

The benefits of VIE compared to FEM, for example, are that it can be used to model open-region scattering and radiation problems without special absorbing boundary conditions and it usually leads to much better conditioned matrix equation than FEM. We are developing and studying various VIE formulations and their efficient numerical implementations in the case of high-contrast anisotropic and inhomogeneous objects.
